Tonight, I would like to adjourn in memory of Jonathan Buchan, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy who sadly passed away last month.
Deputy Buchan was a 2008 graduate of Saugus High School.
His name is included on the Saugus High School Wall of Honor.
After high school, he joined the United States Marines and served two tours in Afghanistan.
He also worked as security at the American Embassy in Kabul.
Following his service in the Marine Corps, he spent two seasons working with the United States Forest Service’s Little Tujunga Hotshots, protecting communities by fighting fires.
He then decided to continue his commitment to serving others by joining the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 2019.
Deputy Buchan was named Honor Recruit out of nearly 70 in his LASD recruit class in 2020.
The Honor Recruit is an award earned by the single recruit who achieves the highest average based on his or her leadership qualities, marksmanship, academics and physical performance during the training period.
Deputy Buchan served the Sheriff’s Department for three and a half years.
He was assigned to the North County Correctional Facility and most recently completed his field training at Century Station.
He will be remembered by those who knew him as a man of honor, character and morality.
We are saddened by Deputy Buchan’s passing and our thoughts are with his extended family and friends.
