I want to take this time to adjourn tonight’s meeting in memory of Steve Hanauer, longtime Santa Clarita resident and owner of Steve’s Valencia Florist on Lyons Avenue, who passed away on July 26th.
Steve’s passion for flowers and business began when he was in junior college after getting a job driving a florist’s delivery truck. He went into business as a florist, running a flower shop in San Fernando before moving up to the Santa Clarita Valley.
He had been running Steve’s Valencia Florist for 12 years before dating his future wife Jan. I read a story in the Signal that when they first started dating Steve sent Jan a single rose on the first day, two on the second, and so on until she received a dozen.
Over the years, Steve’s business grew with the community and had locations on Bouquet Canyon, in the Valencia Industrial Center and on Town Center Drive near the Hyatt.
One tradition that has continued all these years is that when a woman finishes treatment for breast cancer at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital and is cancer free, Steve’s shop sends a complimentary pink rose.
In addition to running the oldest full-service flower shop in Santa Clarita, Steve was active with the Kiwanis Club of Santa Clarita and helped organize the annual 5K at Magic Mountain. He was also involved with the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days fundraiser, the SCV Senior Center and the SCV Boys and Girls Club.
Our thoughts are with Steve’s wife Jan, their daughters, family and friends during this time. We will all miss him dearly.
